Two hit-and-run car accidents in just over a month have left one Florida family devastated. The latest accident occurred Oct. 17 when a driver hit a dirt bike a young couple was riding in Perrine, just 20 miles south of Miami, and then drove off. The young woman’s great-aunt was killed on Sept. 16 in a high-speed hit-and-run accident that was also in Perrine.
The couple was riding a dirt bike on SW 176 Street near 110 Avenue when a red PT Cruiser ran into them. A witness who tried to help the victims said the PT Cruiser just “drove off.” The couple, a 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, were taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center where they were hospitalized for their injuries. The woman had a gash on her leg while the man suffered head trauma and underwent surgery for an injured wrist. The couple’s five-month-old daughter had died just a few days before; her funeral had to be postponed because of the car accident.
Family of the injured couple are hoping the man who hit them will come forward. Miami-Dade Crimestoppers is asking people who have information about the accident or the driver to report it to their hotline.
Accidents involving cars and motorcycles can be devastating enough without other circumstances coming into play, and these victims had already been struggling with the recent loss of their baby to a chromosomal disorder. Victims of car accidents may be eligible for compensation for their medical treatment, lost earnings and other damages from the at-fault driver’s insurance company. A personal injury attorney may be able to assist them by filing a claim and possibly working out a settlement with the liability insurance company to help them recover.
