When you are in an Uber accident, there are few steps to take that are different than what you’d do following any other car accident. Uber isn’t exempt from accidents and their drivers aren’t exempt from making mistakes. If you find you are in an Uber accident, whether you’re in the Uber, the other party, or a pedestrian, you should take the following steps.
Call for Medical Help
If you are physically able, check the passengers, drivers, and pedestrians involved for injuries. If anyone needs immediate first aid and you are qualified to administer it, be sure to take care of injuries first. If those injuries are serious, call 911 and inform the dispatcher that your accident caused injuries that will need immediate medical care.
Make a Police Report
When you call 911, there will typically be police officers who respond to the accident along with the paramedics. The officer will make a report of the accident, and it’s important you tell him or her the facts about what happened. It can be tempting to throw in some of your opinions or feelings about Uber, but leave those for your loved ones at home and just stick to the facts. The officer’s report will be a key factor in determining fault for the accident, so you don’t want to taint it at all.
Collect Evidence
If you’re one of the drivers involved in the accident — whether you are the Uber driver or another — you’ll want to collect evidence so you can prove the other driver was at fault. Start by taking pictures of the accident. Some angles you should get include:
- Close-up pictures of both cars and the damage they sustained.
- Distant pictures of the cars that show their position.
- The surrounding traffic signs and where they are positioned in relation to the accident.
- A good photo of what the weather was like.
You should also get contact and insurance information from any witnesses and victims so your lawyer can contact them. This includes information about the Uber driver and the Uber company.
Contact A Lawyer
Any time you are involved in a car accident, you should seek the assistance of a lawyer. When Uber is involved, you could be entitled to insurance money from the Uber company, but in other situations, you would have to go after the driver personally. Your lawyer can help you make this determination. For more information, or to get started with your case, contact an Uber lawyer, like a Salt Lake City Uber lawyer.
